Project Targets
The project for designing a new, original SSSarm for the DUCATI 1098 begun
early 2007.
The target was manufacturing a magnesium suspension unit to be:

stronger in terms of torsion
resistance by about 15%,
-
stronger in terms of torsio-flexural
resistance by about 15%,
-
lighter, as compared to the
stock aluminum suspension by at least 15%, an unsprung weight saving which,
in terms of bike dynamic performance, corresponds to a potential
of
-
bike weight saving of about 7.2 Kg
-
longer in radius by 15 mm, which
is the same lengthening later chosen by the maker for their WSBK
-
with an enlarged chain tunnel
so that to increase the number of ratios,
-
capable to install either 6.00x17"
or 6.25x16.5" wheel rims.
The SSSarm
can be purchased alone, as a drop fit unit or as a kit, comprehensive of
the "RAM Magnesium Eccentric Housing"

The RAM
magnesium transmission eccentric housing can be purchased complete or naked,
the latter using the stock aluminum housing inner components.

The eccentric

stiffer
then the stock aluminum unit and enables an unsprung weight saving of 30%
which, alone, in terms of bike dynamic performance corresponds to an extra
bike weight saving of about 1.5 Kg making the

total dynamic potential
of bike weight saving of 8.7 Kg.
Independent
Test Results
RAM
Italia was offered the opportunity to have its newest 1098 magnesium SSSarm
tested at length by the Constructor R&D Laboratories.
For
confidentiality reasons what follows is the translation of part of the
test conclusions:
-
The RAM Italia magnesium
Single Sided Swingarm, in spite of a weight reduction of 0.9 Kg (-16%)
and a nominal length increase of 15 mm is much more rigid as compared to
the stock aluminum suspension.

The torsion behavior
shows a +27% rigidity and is completely symmetrical.
|
-
The flexo-torsion
behavior shows a +45% rigidity.
|
-
The flexion reaction
of the magnesium suspension is asymmetrical, the unit being more yelding
to loads applied from the frame left. Though, even in such case, the rigidity
is almost double of the stock aluminum suspension.

All considered, the
average increment in flexion rigidity is about 130%.

Following road
and circuit appraisals, press testers concluded that
the correct blend of project characteristics renders handling performance
of a bike installed with the RAM Italia magnesium sssarm is in all ways
superior to that of a stock bike, expressing comments and opinions such
